On This Day: Jun 20

From Rangers.co.uk:

WE look at some of the memorable moments that have happened on this day in the remarkable history of Rangers Football Club.

1928 – As part of a gruelling tour of America, Rangers defeated Illinois All Stars 4-1 thanks to goals from Andy Cunningham, Dr James Marshall and a brace from Bob McPhail.

McPhail took his tally to 13 for the tour so far and would add another one to that in the final game in New York. The powerful and dynamic McPhail would go on to net 261 goals in 408 matches and won nine league championships for the Light Blues.

1998 – Swedish central defender Joachim Bjorklund joined Valencia as Dick Advocaat continued to make changes to his squad following his appointment. ‘Jocky’ joined Rangers in the summer of 1996 and was part of the Gers side who won the final title of nine in a row.

Bjorklund played 59 times for Rangers before making his move to Valencia, where he played until 2001, before then playing for Venezia, Sunderland and Wolves before retiring. Since he finished playing football, the Swede has been working as a scout for Valencia and also works on TV.

2001 – Fan favourite Giovanni van Bronkhorst left the club to join Arsenal in a deal that was reported at the time to be around £8.5 million. The Gers had signed the Dutchman from Feyenoord in 1998 for a fee in the region of £5.5 million and the midfielder played over 70 times for the club, scoring 13 goals.

Speaking at the time of joining Arsenal, he said: “The ambition, the way we train, the way the team plays – just Wenger’s vision. For me it was quite a good thing to talk with him and see how he works.

“I am an Arsenal player now. There were other clubs interested, in England and abroad but in the end I chose Arsenal. I have spoken to Mr Wenger. He sees me in a central midfield role, on the left side so hopefully I can play alongside Patrick [Vieira] and it’ll be fine.

“Arsenal are close (to winning the Premiership) every season and we must try to become champions.”

1942 – A crowd of 20,000 at Ibrox watched Rangers defeat Falkirk 3-0 in the Summer Cup second round thanks to goals from Marshall and a brace from Gillick.
