Real Madrid brought fantasy soccer to life in the Champions League on Wednesday, as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, and Karim Benzema all notched braces against Schalke, reversing a German curse in the process.

Over their last 25 matches on German soil, the Merengues had just one victory, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side came into the tie riding a 26-game unbeaten streak and secured a 6-1 victory at the Veltins-Arena.

A spot in the quarter-finals now appears a mere formality as the second leg resumes at the Bernabeu in three weeks with Madrid carrying a five goal lead.

Goals: Benzema (13’), Bale (21’), Ronaldo (52’), Benzema (57’), Bale (69’), Ronaldo (89’), Huntelaar (90’+1)

Madrid: Casillas – Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Xabi Alonso (Illarramendi 74’, Di Maria (Isco 67’), Bale (Jese 80’), Benzema, Ronaldo

Schalke: Fährmann – Höwedes, Matip, Santana, Kolasinac (Fuchs 76’), Boateng (Goretzka 58’), Neustädter, Farfan (Obasi 72’), Meyer, Draxler, Huntelaar
