Chelsea FC allowed coach Roberto Di Mateo and new signing Eden Hazard to take the podium on Saturday at a press conference preceding their World Football Challenge game against Paris Saint-Germain at Yankee Stadium.

Just a handful of press members gathered inside the conference room at the Four Seasons hotel where the team is staying during their brief stay in New York City. Delegations from the AP, CNN, British media, and a few others sprinkled across a mostly empty conference room.

Hazard went first, fielding questions in French through a translator. The Belgian international displayed surprising poise for a 21-year-old still learning his role with the reigning European Champions.

Then Di Mateo provided some diplomatic responses on a variety of topics, although he seemed to take exception with the insinuation that Chelsea were a defensive side last year. He told one reporter who asked how the new signings will help Chelsea develop a more attacking style:

“Judging our style of play as defensive I think is wrong. There were a few games where we played a certain style and other games we were very attacking minded.”

After the press conference, Chelsea traveled by bus to a training session in New Jersey at the Timex Performance Center in East Rutherford.

The WFC opener saw Chelsea and especially their new signings provide a positive performance in Seattle on Wednesday, beating the Sounders 4-2. They now face a much more ambitious oppenent in PSG, who are looking to threaten Europe’s elite with their recent injection of cash and talent.

So despite the lack of attention from most American media, this should make for a fantastic spectacle on Sunday night at 7:00 PM EST on Fox Soccer Channel.
