Is Spain Team The Best Ever?

07/01 Euro 2012 Final

Spain 4 Italy 0

Shockingly, Spain were actually out possessed by the Italians in the 1st half in Kiev on Sunday. Unfortunately for the Azzurri, that turned out to be their greatest achievement on the night as Spain put on a magnificent performance, scoring two goals in each half to seal their 3rd consecutive major international title.

Spain finally displayed the attacking firepower that had been lacking from their performances prior to the final. As if they weren’t already, this most recent win certainly puts them into the discussion with the Brazil teams of the early 1970s as the best in football history.

Vicente del Bosque, who guided the team through it’s last two tournament victories becomes only the second coach to win both the World Cup and European Cups. And the four members of the squad who played from Euro 2008 until today, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xavier Hernandez, and Andres Iniesta, can also call themselves some of the best players of all time after their monumental achievement.

There were of course countless other contributors who deserve to share the credit, as goals from Cesc Fabregas, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres, and Juan Mata helped launch Spain into the upper echelon of all-time international soccer greats.

The most lopsided scoreline in Euro Cup Final history actually conceals some decent play from Italy, who had their share of chances in the first half. But Cesare Prandelli used all three substitutions rather quickly and when Thiago Motta became the second Italian player to leave the field injured, the Azzurri had to play the remaining 30 minutes with only 10 men.

Already down 2-0, this left Italy totally deflated and allowed Torres the opportunity to put the game to bed with an 84th minute tap in followed by an 88th minute assist to Chelsea teammate Juan Mata for another easy finish.

The only question now left is, can anyone keep Spain from winning the World Cup in 2014 in Brazil?
