An early goal from Mario Gotze had Bayern Munich back on the score sheet inside ten minutes at Borussia Park on Friday, sparking a 2-0 victory over third place Borussia Monchengladbach.

Playing in Pep Guardiola’s ‘false 9’, the mercurial German helped Bayern extend their unbeaten run in the Bundesliga to 42 games in the year’s first league match.

Thomas Muller doubled the lead shortly into the second half with a coolly taken penalty, converting after  Granit Xhaka was caught handling the ball as Thiago lined up a shot inside the box.

With the victory, the Bavarians now hold a ten point lead above rivals Borussia Dortmund, as they prepare for another road trip to VfB Stuttgart on Wednesday.

Goals: Gotze (7), Muller (pen. 53)

Borussia Mönchengladbach: ter Stegen, Korb, Stranzl, Dominguez, Wendt, Kramer, Xhaka, Herrmann (Hrogota 76), Arango, Raffael, Kruse

FC Bayern: Neuer, Rafinha, Boateng, Dante, Alaba, Lahm, Müller, Thiago, Kroos (Hojbjerg 87), Shaqiri (Robben 79), Götze (Pizarro 81)
