Future Prospect: Gedion Zelalem Debuts for Arsenal

01/25/2014  London, England

Amid Arsenal’s relatively straightforward dismantling of Coventry City in the FA Cup Fourth Round on Friday was an exciting debut for former American high-school standout Gedion Zelalem.

Though he has yet to sign his first professional contract, the 16-year-old midfielder completed his meteoric rise to the Gunners’ senior team with an impressive 20 minute cameo in a holding role next to Jack Wilshere in the 4-0 victory.

Zelalem has featured for both the German and American youth national teams, is of Ethiopian descent, but considers himself to be American according to an in-depth piece published by The Guardian.

Born in Germany, he played for the Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin’s youth academy before spending his formative years from 9-16 in the States, where he caught the eye of Arsenal scouts at the Dallas Cup in 2011.

Said manager Arsene Wenger on Zelalem’s performance according to the club’s official website:

It was a good opportunity to give him a chance to play and he showed when he came on that he is not scared, not fazed by the occasion. He wants the ball and you feel there is some vision and personality behind his pass.

Despite his young age, the boy could be one for the future…
